Schmerder, Kurt


Born: 13.05.1916 in Bautzen

  • joined Panzerregiment 1 on 17.11.1938,

  • served with the regimental staff as a Gefreiter and gunner during the Polish campaign,

  • served as a Panzer commander with the regimental staff during the French campaign,

  • pursued a career as a reserve officer and conducted officer training at the Panzertruppenschule in Wünsdorf,

  • transferred to Panzerersatzabteilung 1, where he served as a company leader,

  • transferred to Panzerregiment 25 on 12.07.1941, where he served as platoon leader, orderly officer and company leader,

  • transferred to Panzerregiment 204 in October 1942,

  • transferred to Panzerausbildungsabteilung 204 in the summer of 1943,

  • became part of the newly formed schwere Panzerabteilung 509,

  • left the Wehrmacht in august 1943 and became an HJ-leader in the Netherlands,

  • served as a company leader in the ad-hoc unit "Langer" from January 1945 until the end of the war,

  • was taken prisoner by the British in May 1945, released in June 1945,

  • stayed in West Germany after the war and joined the Bundeswehr in the 1950s.
